why is the london bridge always falling down?

This is a photo I took of the London Bridge when I was in Lovely London a few months ago.

I often played the London Bridge is falling down game as a child. You know the game...you link hands with some other crazy bored child and sing the song...

London Bridge is falling down,
Falling down, Falling down.
London Bridge is falling down,
My fair lady.

Then you catch someone inbetween your arms. Very fun game. I should play it today...who's in?

So then we hear the fab Fergie Ferg singing, "How come every time you come around My London London Bridge want to go down Like London London want you to go down Like London London be going down like..."

Ok...so what is this London bridge refrence exactly meaning to communicate with us? Jimmy and me were both pondering the question this morning and well---have no idea.

So I dug a little deeper and found some research on the subject and this is what I found on Wikipedia.org

History

The earliest reference to the rhyme appears to be in a play of 1659, and it is recorded as being associated with children by 1720. The earliest known text dates from a little later, appearing in Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book (circa 1744). It is likely, however, that it was already well-established by this time.

The rhyme may have had considerably more ancient antecedents. In 1013, London Bridge was burned down by King Ethelred and his Norwegian ally Olaf Haraldsson in a bid to divide the invading forces of the Danish king Svein Haraldsson. The event was recorded in the Saga of Olaf Haraldson, part of the Heimskringla composed around 1225 by Snorri Sturluson. Snorri quotes extracts of a lay by a Norse poet, Ottar Svarte, including the following passage which is strikingly similar to parts of the rhyme:

London Bridge is broken down. --
Gold is won, and bright renown.
Shields resounding,
War-horns sounding,
Hild is shouting in the din!
Arrows singing,
Mail-coats ringing --
Odin makes our Olaf win! [1]

However, the popular version probably originates from 1269, when Henry III granted the tolling right to Queen Eleanor. She is the "fair lady" who notably failed to spend the resulting funds on actually maintaining the structure.

Meaning

The meaning of the rhyme is obscure. Most obviously, it relates to the many difficulties experienced in bridging the River Thames: London's earlier bridges did indeed "wash away" before a bridge built of "stone so strong" was constructed. It has been suggested that the "fair lady" who is "locked up" is a reference to an old practice of burying a dead virgin in the foundations of the bridge to ensure its strength through magical means, although this more plausibly refers to Queen Eleanor. Intriguingly, the rhyme is not confined to England and variants exist in many other western and central European countries.

Trivia

Modernist poet T.S. Eliot used the first two lines of this rhyme in his famous poem The Waste Land.

Late indie musician Elliott Smith referenced the rhyme in song, "Baby Britain" --"London bridge is safe and sound, no matter what you keep repeating, nothing's going to drag me down, to a death that's not worth cheating."

Nu-Metal band KoRn used a part of this rhyme for their song Shoots and Ladders.

Darkwave band Switchblade Symphony used two verses of and added to the original rhyme for their song Gutter Glitter.

Hip hop performer Lil Jon performed a crunk version of ths rhyme on Nick Cannon's Wild 'N Out show.[2]

The title from the 1993 movie "Falling Down" was inspired from this song, which is also sung in the movie.

In the Disney movie Pocahontas, Governor Ratclife's dog has a toy carousel from which dog biscuits hang. When the carousel moves, it plays "London Bridge is Falling Down"

The theme song to celebreality show My Fair Brady is sung to the same melody as "London Bridge is Falling Down".

In Fergie of Black Eyed Peas's song, "London Bridge," Fergie sings: How come every time you come around My London London Bridge want to go down Like London London want you to go down Like London London be going down like... This is a direct reference to this song.

A hard day's work...

It's a hard job, but someone has to do it.

I absoluely love not working for the man. I work for the most awesome woman and love every moment of it.

Today Jimbo and me took one of our beloved trips to Starbucks and Target.

We got 4 lbs of coffee and three different types of creamers for the office.

We had a Lisa Loeb sing along on the way home and it was AWESOME!

Our 2 coffee pots showed up from Amazon today- one black and one white so...

We brewed some up when we got back and it was delightful.

Jimbo and I like the caramel vanilla creamer.

John and I discovered I used approximately 4 times more beans then I needed.

All in all the coffee trip turned out to be a success.

Except when I tripped on the puppies, spilled the coffee and scolded my thumb and Popeye's small puppy body.

Good riddance moving...

I hate how I look like a janitor, because I have keys to 2 apartments, work, my mom's house, my car, 2 garages, a storage unit, 2 mail box keys and I think one to the Gateway...that I need to return for my $5 deposit.

I hate moving.
I have moved approximately onehundredmillionandahalf times.
I hate it.
I hate everything about it.

Seeing boxes makes me want to puke.

It's sad that I think how much better I would like it if I threw myself down the stairs and broke my leg- so I wont have to help move...everytime I move.

I hate packing.
I hate carrying boxes.
I hate those tape dispensers.
I hate how my fingers get peely from the tape/box combination.
I hate moving boxes into trucks or cars.
I hate taking them out again.
I hate having to lock Penny up to move.
I hate carrying them into the new place.
I hate moving things that aren't mine.
I hate moving my dad for the 205th time in the past 5 years.
I hate moving my mom for the 450th time in the past 8 years.
I hate carrying heavy furniture.
I hate dust.
I hate dirt.
I hate moving.

I hope to get a stinkin house after this move.
I will pay movers to pack and move my stuff.

I will never move things again.

And that is a promise.

Me and my love...

Thanks Chris Machian a great friend and a great photographer...

Oh I wish...

...always a woman to me...

She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child, but she's always a woman to me
She can lead you to love, she can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth, but she'll never believe
And she'll take what you give her as long it's free
Yeah, She steals like a thief, but she's always a woman to me
CHORUS
Ohhh... she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants, she's ahead of her time
Ohhh... and she never gives out
And she never gives in, she just changes her mind
And she'll promise you more than the garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you and laugh while you're bleeding
But she?ll bring out the best and the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself 'cause she's always a woman to me
CHORUS
She's frequently kind and she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases, she's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree
And the most she will do is throw shadows at you,
But she's always a woman to me

goodbye mary- hello alice

i would like to congratulate my dear friend jimbo for taking the plunge- and getting both feet deep into a vw. it is an exciting time to be in a vw seeing that it is the first time that the rabbit has been reproduced since august 1984.

Friday I'm in Love

This is how I feel...so I will sing it!

I don't care if Monday's blue

Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too

Thursday I don't care about you

It's Friday i'm in love

Monday you can fall apart

Tuesday Wednesday break my heart

thursday doesn't even start

It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday wait

And Sunday always comes too late

But Friday never hesitate...

I don't care if Monday's black

Tuesday Wednesday heart attack

Thursday never looking back

It's Friday I'm in love

Monday you can hold your head

Tuesday Wednesday stay in bed

Or Thursday watch the walls instead

It's Friday i'm in love

Saturday wait

And Sunday always comes too late

But Friday never hesitate...

Dressed up to the eyes

It's a wonderful surprise

To see your shoes and your spirits rise

Throwing out your frown

And just smiling at the sound

And as sleek as a shriek

Spinning round and round

Always take a big bite

It's such a gorgeous sight

To see you in the middle of the night

You can never get enough

Enough of this stuff

It's Friday

I'm in love

like a girl on Christmas...

They came in today...

I was so excited to see the UPS man I ran and opened the door for him. haha.

They are as glorious as I imagined.

I love today.

It's the best, here are the reasons why:

1. It's Friday.

2. I have a kick ass job that I love, where they have used petty cash to get me caramel iced coffees for the second day in a row.

3. There is a tiny white Maltese puppy on my lap while I work...I love olive.

4. My smokin hott wedding shoes came in!

5. I get off work early today to go Natalie's rehearsal dinner.

6. I get to be in a wedding tomorrow! I love weddings...Plus I get to wear a killer Tiffany's teal dress that I look pretty hot in.

7. I'm getting married in 134 days to the man that I love.

8. Christopher Walken is running for President in 2008.

9. I'm getting a manicure and possibly my first pedicure today with Nat!

10. I'm in love.

When it's time to change...

Thank God for hairdye.

Whenever I feel boring I just pick up a box and go to town. I have had every color and every brand.

I love the idea of just being able to change whenever I want.

Some people don't ever change the outside, which is fine...But I can't live without a new look every month or so.

But I will never change my inside...So that is good.

You will always be able to recognize me, don't worry.

...they will see us waving from such great heights...

Ms Penny Lane Petersen-Schlegelmilch's new hobby. Climing to to the highest points in my new apartment.

On another note one of my favorite songs lyrics...thanks Postal Service and Iron and Wine.

I always imagine me and Mr Joel in a hot air balloon waving from above and then we steal a kiss.

I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles
In our eyes are mirror images and when
We kiss they're perfectly aligned
And I have to speculate that God himself
Did make us into corresponding shapes like
Puzzle pieces from the clay
True, it may seem like a stretch, but
Its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
Head when you're away when I am missing you to death
When you are out there on the road for
Several weeks of shows and when you scan
The radio, I hope this song will guide you home

They will see us waving from such great
Heights, 'come down now,' they'll say
But everything looks perfect from far away,
'come down now,' but we'll stay...

I tried my best to leave this all on your
Machine but the persistent beat it sounded
Thin upon listening
That frankly will not fly. you will hear
The shrillest highs and lowest lows with
The windows down when this is guiding you home

Cecilia...

Celia, you're breaking my heart
You're shaking my confidence daily
Oh, cecilia, Im down on my knees
I'm begging you please to come home

Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I'm laughing,
Jubilation, she loves me again,
I fall on the floor and I'm laughing

New arrival...

Now introducing little miss Popeye. The proud father, Tenniel from work, is happy to hear the pitter patter of little paws around his place and we are happy to hear more pattering of paws here at the office. She is the cutest French/American bulldog ever! I hear she has a brother or sister on the way. We shall see tomorrow.

Farewell Names Without Numbers...

RockYou slideshow | View | Add Favorite

I wanted to blog this morning in honor of one of the greatest bands that has ever played together. That is right, Names without Numbers, I love you so.

And not just because my fiancé' Joel is the bassist, but Ryan, Dave and John have all shown me a goodtime for a quiet a while.

I remember going to see NWN when I was in high school, before Joel was in the band, when Brian played bass. John Rasmussen and me would go and rock out at Rebels to them. We loved how crazy Brian got on the bass.

I use to host Video Diversity Rock- and I remember one night after a show, Ryan came up to me and was like, "Hey, don't you do that TV show?" And I'm like, "Why yes I do, sorry it sucks" And Ryan says, "No, Im actually a huge fan." And I say with a chuckle, "Well I'm actually a huge fan of your band." HAHA.

Joel and me followed them to Cornerstone and rocked out with them every summer. I even bought a shirt- the only thing I bought the whole time- and I could have gotten one in Omaha, Ha.

Next came Nick, on the bass- equally as crazy, and a screamer. I loved seeing him perform also. I tried to book NWN at UNO for like 4 years, I loved them so much, too bad they all worked during the day and never graced my little stage at UNO.

Then came the day when Nick was no longer playing bass in the band, and Dave asked my man, Mr. Joel, if he would do the honors. I was like no flipping way. We couldn't believe it.

Of course, he said yes- and a few weeks later we were off in the van on our way to Minneapolis for Joel's first show with NWN.

I remember getting into the van, Dave turned on Andrew WK and thinking- "Im going to like these guys even more!" Side note: I LOVE AWK!

The place they played was at this huge place called the Qwest Club. I took my new Nikon D-70 and shot like I've never shot before, still some of my favorite pics- because I could go up above the stage and shoot.

From there I traveled with the band doing mini tours through SD, MN, IA and good old NE. From Barns and festivals to Convention Centers we have seen it all. We always had a goodtime and made new friends along the way, including ET.

It's only been two years this next month since Joel started with NWN, who's been around since the beginning of time, but those two years were pretty frickin great.

I've always wanted to live a life on the road as a rock star. I got to see a bit of what it is like and learned a lot of great life lessons along the way. Like dont bring ballerina flats on a New Years Eve tour to MN...snow boots would be a smarter choice.

I will miss Ryan yelling at Dave about giving us horrible directions, Dave always being right, John all ways being late and his crazy snack choices on the road, Joel standing on the left side of the stage (my left) and moving slowly but surely with his bass.

Dave with his HUGE amp cases and Ryan with his little honey bear. Johns little pal, PJ, running all over going crazy. Getting to hang with the wives, Melissa and Tina, and talk about how crazy our boys are. Joel looking down at me from the stage and making silly faces. Dave always promoting the next show or the merch in the back.

One of my favorite memories is when Dave said that everyone should go and buy some merch from the pretty girl in the back, me, but not to mess with me cause I'm taken. He then continued on, "Joel our bass player over here, asked her to marry him, and she said yes!" Then everyone clapped and I smiled and said that is me!

The point being, I love these boys of Names Without Numbers and thank them kindly for the fond memories through out the years.
